According to ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialists, prolonged mouth breathing is not just a bad habit—it can pose serious health risks, ranging from sleep disturbances and oral health problems to respiratory issues.

Dr. Harihara Murthy, an ENT specialist and head and neck surgeon at Apollo Spectra Hospital in Bangalore, India, explains that nasal breathing is the body’s natural mechanism.

When air passes through the nose, it is warmed, humidified, and filtered before reaching the lungs. In contrast, mouth breathing bypasses this “protective barrier,” making the body more vulnerable to harm.

According to Dr. Murthy, sleep disorders are among the most common consequences of mouth breathing. This habit can cause enlarged tonsils and persistent snoring, leading to disrupted sleep and reduced recovery of energy.

Oral health problems are also frequent. Mouth breathing dries out the oral cavity, disrupts the natural balance of bacteria, and increases the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and chronic bad breath.

In terms of respiratory health, oxygen levels in the blood may decrease, negatively affecting lung function. This is particularly dangerous for individuals with asthma or chronic lung conditions, as it can worsen their symptoms.
