Potatoes with Meatballs and Cheese

Ingredients

For the Meatballs

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion

  • 1 egg

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (panko works well)

  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Potatoes

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup tomato sauce

  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley

  • 2 tablespoons chopped basil

  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

For the Cream Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • 4 tablespoons flour

  • 2 cups milk

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste


Instructions

1. Prepare the Meatballs

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, chopped onion, egg, and breadcrumbs.

  3. Add parsley, basil, oregano, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.

  4. Form the mixture into small meatballs (about 20 pieces).

  5. Place them on a baking tray and bake for 12–15 minutes until lightly browned.


2. Make the Cream Sauce

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.

  2. Add the flour and whisk until smooth and lightly golden.

  3. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly.

  4. Cook until the sauce thickens.

  5. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.


3. Assemble the Dish

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes on the bottom of a baking dish.

  3. Place the meatballs over the potatoes.

  4. Add another layer of potatoes and meatballs.

  5. Pour the tomato sauce over the top.

  6. Add herbs and drizzle the cream sauce evenly across the dish.

  7. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over everything.


4. Bake

Bake for 45–50 minutes, until:
