These Are the Hidden Consequences of Sleeping Too Close to Heat Sources — What You Need to Know

At first glance, it may look like a strange skin condition. The patchy, net-like discoloration on the leg in the image above can easily be mistaken for a rash or circulation issue. But in many cases, it’s something far more surprising—and far more common than people realize.

What Is Actually Happening?

Doctors identify this condition as erythema ab igne, a term that literally means “redness from fire.” It occurs when the skin is exposed to low levels of heat over long periods of time—not enough to burn, but enough to cause gradual damage beneath the surface.

Unlike a typical burn, this condition develops slowly. The warmth may feel comforting at first, but repeated exposure can affect tiny blood vessels under the skin, leading to a distinct, lace-like or blotchy pattern.

How Does It Happen?

Many people unknowingly cause this by:

  • Sleeping too close to space heaters

  • Using electric blankets for extended periods

  • Keeping heating pads pressed against the skin

  • Sitting near heat sources for hours at a time

What feels like harmless warmth can quietly lead to changes in blood flow and skin pigmentation over time.

Why It Matters

While it may seem like just a cosmetic issue at first, prolonged exposure can lead to more serious concerns:

  • Persistent skin discoloration that may last for months

  • Chronic irritation or sensitivity

  • In rare cases, long-term skin damage or pre-cancerous changes

Because the heat isn’t intense, many people don’t realize the damage is happening until the marks appear.
